Mixed Reality Buck: the Evolution of Vehicle Models

As transportation evolves, electric and autonomous vehicles are transforming the look and feel of the interior and exterior of modern vehicles.  As designs change our clients want to ensure the vehicles they create are aesthetically and functionally in line with their customers’ requirements. Envisage are experts in supporting our client’s vehicle design from the early stages and have developed our dynamic buck to assist with this process.

Traditional Ergo Bucks

Traditionally, ergonomic bucks are made to be a physical representation of a vehicle’s interior, particularly with seating and layout. They are a static, tangible model for engineers and designers to assess comfort, usability, and safety before mass production.

The Dynamic Seating Buck

Improving on traditional ergonomic bucks, the Dynamic Buck replaces static fixtures with motorised elements. Sixteen individual actuators and supporting rail systems allow for movement within the IP, front seats, rear seats, and the rear passenger footrest; the overall buck ground clearance can also be adjusted. The buck delivers an immersive experience with a flexible frame for different seats and to achieve different vehicle set-ups for anything from coupes to 4×4’s. It has the capability to combine a physical experience with Virtual Reality at the early stage of development.

A Virtual Reality Experience

Designers can visualise their product within a VR environment and update the virtual model with real world data due to the array of microcontrollers responsible for receiving CAN commands from the Wi-Fi receiver. Real-time actuator positional feedback information is also injected onto the CAN network which is then received by a CAN to USB transmitter, giving users the option to receive millimetre feedback.

App Development

We can also develop applications to control models from tablets and mobile devices. Every actuator on the buck can be moved individually through the application. There is also a preset function, allowing users to automatically adjust the buck to multiple hard-coded preset positions as per the client’s specification.
